I'm writing my first unit tests in Java. These are actually benchmark tests, but my boss told me I should set them up as unit tests. So I looked a few JUnit tutorials at what @Before meant, and as I understood it, that's where you initialize variables that get reused in later tests.

The specific object that I need to reause is the INDArray M object. However, when I use this object's multiply method later on in the @Test section, I get a null pointer exception.

Question in the title, and here is my minimal example:

  • I will note that you appear to be trying to mix JUnit 4 and JUnit 5 within the same test class. Eliminate one set of dependencies from your project. – chrylis -cautiouslyoptimistic- May 13 '21 at 16:39

Let me read to you from the answer provided in the linked question: "The NullPointerException (NPE) occurs when you declare a variable but did not create an object and assign it to the variable before trying to use the contents of the variable (called dereferencing). So you are pointing to something that does not actually exist." But I created an object in `@Before`, so how does this answer help me at all? – rocksNwaves May 13 '21 at 16:45
