I am following a make a game course and I keep getting an error in m code, and I have no clue how to fix it. Here is the problem code:

   private void Flip()
    {
        // Switch the way the player is labelled as facing.
        m_FacingRight = !m_FacingRight;

        // Multiply the player's x local scale by -1.
        Vector3 theScale = playerGraphics.localScale;
        theScale.x *= -1;
        playerGraphics.localScale = theScale;
    }
}

I am getting the error "Null Reference Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object". What do I need to do to fix it?

Here is all of my code:

using System; using UnityEngine;

  • Please edit your question to make the question more specific. In its current form it'll help no-one else :) `playerGraphics` is null anyway - you're never setting that variable (as it's the only thing that can potentially be null). We can't see the code that *should* set it, so you'll need to share more of your source here. – Luke Briggs Nov 27 '16 at 21:26
  • playerGraphics is not assigned. Do that and the error should go away. If you don't know how to do this then include all your code in the question – Programmer Nov 27 '16 at 21:29
  • I added all my code – Luke Thompson Nov 27 '16 at 21:38
  • @JacobP. Your error is a sneaky one that catches a lot of people out; edit: Can't add an answer! I'll comment instead :P – Luke Briggs Nov 27 '16 at 22:03
  • Specifically it's `if (playerGraphics = null)`. This is actually setting playerGraphics to null and it's the same as `if(true)`. – Luke Briggs Nov 27 '16 at 22:05
  • You'll want `if(playerGraphics == null)` instead. This is a comparison rather than a set :) – Luke Briggs Nov 27 '16 at 22:05
  • It still has that error message edit: I figured it out. Thanks! – Luke Thompson Nov 28 '16 at 00:01
