Can't install numpy 1.8 with python 2.7 under windows 7

Question

I have donwloaded numpy 1.8 zip version and I have python 2.7 and windows 7. When I do

python setup.py install

I get:

The last line is a hint that it's looking for Visual Studio 2008. Best to go with the installer on Windows. `numpy-1.7.1-win32-superpack-python2.7.exe` — Jonathon Reinhart, Dec 03 '13 at 09:29

Compiling from source is somewhat tedious on Windows. I suggest you use precompiled installers, such as the ones from http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/. Alternatively, you can install PIP, a python package installer (available from the same site, for instance). With PIP, package installation is simple:

pip install numpy

Unless you have binary package in WHEEL format (which is still rare) pip install will try to compile C extensions the same as `setup.py install` so using pip does not help in this case. – Piotr Dobrogost Dec 03 '13 at 12:42
