fix java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out

Question

I have a RESTful server which takes an http POST input from client to vote up songs on server. I have used Apache HTTPClient for client.

When I click vote button on succession, after few votes (like 7-8), I get java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out exception. When I searched the reason, I found this is because client didn't get server response on timeout period. But the problem is that when I use other applications like Chrome REST Console or JMeter, I can vote a lots of votes on the same server with same parameters and path. Is there any problem with my java code. Please help me figure this out. Following is my stacktrace:

If you set a read timeout and you get a read timeout and you don't want a read timeout, increase the read timeout. It's only happening because you asked for it. If you think the server should be quicker than it is, take it up with them. — user207421, Oct 10 '13 at 07:16
I tried to increase read timeout too, but sooner or later I was running into that problem. Actually I'd forgotten to close the connections, hence keeping wanted connections alive and consuming server resources. Answer by @Santosh below helped a lot. — asok Buzz, Oct 10 '13 at 11:08

Here are few pointers/suggestions for investigation

I see that every time you vote, you call vote method which creates a fresh HTTP connection.
This might be a problem. I would suggest to use a single HttpClient instance to post to the server. This way it wont create too many connections from the client side.
At the end of everything, HttpClient needs to be shut and hence call httpclient.getConnectionManager().shutdown(); to release the resources used by the connections.

I don't think it's enough merely to get the response. I think you need to read it (get the entity and read it via EntityUtils.consume()).

e.g. (from the doc)

     System.out.println("<< Response: " + response.getStatusLine());
     System.out.println(EntityUtils.toString(response.getEntity()));
