When I'm in a hotel, I can connect to the wifi network (from device) without having to provide any login details. I then get a notification that the network requires information before i can use it. I click on the message and am taken to a web page where I provide my credit card details or room number etc and only after that do I get internet access on my device.

I am wanting to build this kind of system, and for various reasons (that I cannot go into - please just take this as a hard requirement - i.e. it won't change) I don't want to use an off the self solution. I have to build the authentication web page myself.

Unfortunately I know very little about this tech, and so am finding internet research difficult - I don't know what to look for.

Can anyone advise a starting point, or give me a brief overview on how this process works (i.e. what router features should I be looking for, and what is the process for passing off to a page and then passing control back called)?

I'm pretty much asking if someone can give me the bare basics and I can research further from there.

Thanks in advance.
